Dodge City Water Reclamation and Reuse
The City of Dodge City has a non-discharging South wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) approximately 10 miles south of the City that has been reusing 100% of the 2 billion gallons of effluent produced annually for more than 40 years. PEC has been the designer for the two major expansions to the treatment plant as well as other modifications for the last 25 years, including expansion of the irrigation system infrastructure to continue and enhance the reuse practice.
The North Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) and reuse infrastructure were designed by PEC and have been in operation since 2010. The North WRF utilizes membrane bioreactors (MBR) and ultraviolet disinfection to treat the wastewater to high quality standards for irrigation use in the City. A transmission main was installed to the Mariah Hills Golf Course and improvements to their storage and irrigation system allows use of reuse water for watering of the greens, allowing a municipal well to be put back into service for domestic use. Infrastructure was also installed to allow reuse water to be taken to other locations in the City in the future.
During the preliminary design of the recent expansion to the South WWTP, PEC discussed the high estimated costs required to expand the irrigation system with the City which led to a reevaluation of what would be the best use of the effluent for their investment. As a result, PEC is currently part of the team starting design of a new era in reuse in Dodge City, including an MBR treatment plant, piping, pumping, and an outfall to discharge further treated effluent from the South WWTP into the Arkansas River for recharge. This project is anticipated to pave the way for IPR requirements in Kansas. Each of these projects has expanded and strengthened the City’s infrastructure and capabilities to ensure diligent use of the resource of reuse water; this practice is central to Dodge City’s core beliefs and values.
