East 16th Street (US-160) Pedestrian and Bicycle Trail

Project Profile

Wellington, KS

East 16th Street (US-160) is one of the main arterial roadways that go through the city of Wellington, KS. With the added businesses and growing population, the road had become a safety concern for pedestrians, driveways were too steep, causing damage to cars, and patrons could not access businesses easily.

In 2021, the City worked with PEC and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to make improvements and increase accessibility to the road. This project included the construction of a 10′-wide, ADA-compliant path on a steep incline. The multi-use path was added to the north side of the road for pedestrian safety, and the path closed a half-mile gap in the City’s existing sidewalk system between A Street and Woodlawn Street. Driveways were also regraded to make businesses more accessible for customers. During the construction of the path, the City improved the roadway while the KDOT reconstructed the bridge adjacent to the project. To minimize disruption to the community, the City coordinated with KDOT, the design teams, and their contractors to synchronize the schedules for all three projects taking place.

Pedestrians and bicyclists can safely access businesses and city amenities from the new multi-use path. The newly graded driveways have reduced the damage to cars, which makes their everyday commute more enjoyable.
