SW Clay Street Improvements

Project Profile

Topeka, KS

Over 100 years ago Southwest Clay Street was laid with brick. As the City of Topeka has grown, repeated updates have been made to this street to meet the growing needs of the area. One of these updates the laying of asphalt over the historic brick road. As time passed, the road continued to get worse. PEC was chosen to design a better road for the City.

Originally, PEC was hired for a design-build project to make updates at Southwest Clay Street to solve the issues arising with drainage, health of mature trees alongside the street, meeting ADA Standards, and reoccurring need of maintenance. During the design process, PEC reached out to the city’s residents and heard their vision for the neighborhood to preserve its historic charm. PEC was able to design a safe road while bringing back the brick road. By placing a concrete layer underneath the layer of brick, storm water can flow through the cracks of the brick and seep into the permeable material placed between the concrete and curb.

PEC worked with the City, contactors, and the City’s residents to resurrect the rustic aesthetic of the street using the original brick, preserving mature trees, meeting ADA standards and reducing life cycle maintenance costs with minimal disruption to the neighborhood.
