Doc B-29 Maintenance and Storage Hangar and Education Center
Wichita is home to Doc, one of only two remaining airworthy Boeing B-29 Superfortress aircrafts in the world. Doc was one of the 1,644 B-29’s manufactured in Wichita during World War II. In 1987, Doc was discovered in the Mojave Desert where the U.S. Navy had been utilizing it for target practice. Beginning in 2000, Boeing and dedicated volunteers spent many hours restoring the historic aircraft before Doc’s Friends (a 501c3 nonprofit board) was created to bring Doc’s restoration to completion.
Doc now travels across the U.S. to airshows to teach enthusiasts about aviation history. When not flying, the aircraft is on display at the new B-29 Doc Hangar Education and Visitors Center, which offers visitors a place to learn about the history of the airplane and to get a glimpse of Wichita’s aviation heritage.
Located at the Eisenhower National Airport, the 32,000 SF, $6.5 million facility includes 24,000 SF of hangar space and a working maintenance facility, where the public is invited to watch crews maintain Doc with hands-on learning experiences. The upper mezzanine houses the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and history center.
