BG Products Manufacturing Plant
BG Products is a global leader in fuel and oil additives for the automotive industry. BG Products manufactures its products in El Dorado, Kansas, and distributes them all over the world. In 2012, a new $50 million, 174,000-square-foot manufacturing facility was built as a home for their automotive fuel and oil additive production and packaging operations.
Understanding that this facility would be primarily focused on production and packaging of highly volatile hydrocarbon-based products drove many decisions regarding the mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering design elements. From designing the proper amount of exhaust to ensure that certain explosive gasses were not collecting within the building to incorporation of the proper design elements to minimize or eliminate potential risks associated with static electricity and any ill effects of lightning strikes, PEC was tasked with providing not only a functioning and efficient facility but also an inherently safe one for workers to occupy.
Structurally, the collaborative decision was made to construct the walls and roof with precast concrete to minimize fire hazards and increase the allowed amount of open space within the building. Additionally, at the associated raw materials tank farm, PEC also designed catwalks for maintenance and operational usage as well as secondary containment. To add to the challenge of the facility and with the presence of petroleum-based chemicals, stormwater control and segregation becomes a challenging and important task. As such, a series of stormwater detention and containment methods were used to successfully meet the EPA and KDHE requirements.
Whether filling more than 200,000 11-ounce cans per shift or packing 75 kits per minute, the facility was built for optimal efficiency, speed, and safety. Serving a client with an international, and a local presence, is just part of the reason PEC was excited to be a part of the design team for the manufacturing facility.
