Exploring Green Light Systems
As we continually seek to provide innovations for our healthcare clients, we’re excited to bring forward-thinking solutions that ensure they have access to the tools they need to deliver exceptional care. The installation of specialized green LED lighting within operating rooms is one such solution as it allows for enhanced visibility during general surgical procedures.
Suitable for hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers, green light systems offer several benefits:
- Enhanced visibility: Green light improves the contrast of tissue to help surgeons distinguish between different shades of red and pink, which is critical for quick and accurate diagnosis.
- Improved video monitor clarity: In operating rooms, large video monitors display detailed surgical images. Green lighting reduces the glare and enhances contrast on the monitors which leads to clearer visuals for the entire surgery team.
- Reduction of afterimage effects: Surgical sites are often illuminated to very high footcandle levels. When surgeons shift their gaze to darker areas of the room, they can suffer from an afterimage effect while their eyes adjust. Green lighting minimizes these effects, reducing eye strain, and improving comfort for the surgeon.

How are green light systems different from traditional lighting?
Green light systems are flexible enough to integrate seamlessly into different surgical environments. Because the fixtures combine green and white lighting components and are typically controlled using separate toggle or dimmer switches, it doesn’t differ much compared to traditional LED systems. This allows for green lighting to be used at the discretion of the surgeon and surgery team.
Are green light systems cost effective?
Despite their advanced functionality, green light systems are a cost-effective addition for many surgical spaces. Compared to the total cost to construct an operating room (arguably the most expensive space to construct in a hospital), green light fixtures and control systems incur a marginal cost increase. For healthcare clients, the benefits far outweigh the investment.
Green light systems are an impactful innovation in healthcare facility design that benefit surgical teams and, most importantly, patients with better surgical outcomes.
