USD 258 Humboldt Public Schools Renovations & Additions
In 2022, USD 258 in Humboldt, Kansas, passed a bond issue for additions and remodels to the buildings in the Humboldt public school system. With a wealth of experience and understanding of the vital role education plays in a community, Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) was proud to join the project.
PEC provided electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering services on the projects. It was an immense undertaking with all three teams taking on the challenge. The project included additions and remodels on four buildings: the elementary school, middle school, high school, and community fieldhouse.
Beginning at the elementary school, a 7,500 SF addition was planned. This addition included a new cafeteria, two classrooms, new restrooms, and a corridor leading from the addition to the existing storm shelter. The current 33,580 SF building was renovated to bring the restrooms up to ADA compliance, update the kitchen space, and rework all the current corridors.
At the middle school, PEC designed a 6,755 SF addition and all the required systems for three new classrooms, a workroom, individual restrooms, and support spaces. In the existing part of the building, remodels included the existing science classroom, office, and entry security areas, increasing the size of the technology lab, a rework of the computer lab, and a new exhaust system in the welding lab.
The largest addition was at the high school. It was 11,380 SF consisting of a three-story tower, stairs, elevator, restrooms on each floor, a new secured entry and office area, dining area, and administration areas such as a conference room, nurse’s room, and offices. In the existing 68,000 SF high school building, the existing corridors and science classroom were remodeled, and the auditorium mezzanine was enclosed.
Finally, the community fieldhouse received a new HVAC system to allow for heating of the space and an upgraded fire alarm system. Fire alarm and HVAC systems were also replaced in the three classroom buildings. Now, students at Humboldt Public Schools have an updated environment to learn in, along with compliant and accessible facilities.
