Ponca City High School Wildcat STEM Academy
Through the passing of a local bond measure, Ponca City Public Schools had the opportunity to renovate an existing wing of the high school. They were looking to create a new science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teaching space for students planning to further their education with an interest in high-tech trades and careers.
The wing of the high school slated for renovation posed an interesting challenge. It was constructed before many of the modern technologies and conveniences used today were available, which meant converting the existing 2-pipe mechanical system to a more modern 4-pipe system. The HVAC system required an innovative design to work within the limited floor-to-floor height of the building. PEC’s team also designed a new electrical distribution system to handle the increased load capacity. A major showpiece, the entryway features a lighted Wildcat design made to mimic a circuit board. Every discipline involved in the project worked in close coordination to maximize the amount of usable learning space.
The finished STEM building features more than just classrooms. Students now have access to new computer labs, a makerspace equipped with 3D printers and a CNC machine, as well as metal and woodworking areas, and science labs. This latest addition to Ponca City Schools inspires students and better prepares them for a future in highly technical industries.
