Phillips Fundamental Learning Center

Project Profile

Wichita, KS

The Phillips Fundamental Learning Center provides educational services to children with dyslexia and their families, and trains educators to teach children using structured literacy instruction. To accommodate more students, the Center opened a new 38,750 SF state-of-the-art facility nestled in northeast Wichita.

Inspired by a recovered Frank Lloyd Wright drawing, the architectural “flower-and-petals” design of the facility posed a unique challenge. Its distinctive features include a circular center with three separate wings expanding outwards.

With very few straight walls and square corners, the mechanical design had to accommodate for the curves of the building while keeping a clean aesthetic. This included modeling ductwork and piping with offsets and elbows and installing HVAC equipment in tight, allotted areas on each wing.

The electrical work included an audio visual system that incorporated assisted listening systems to aid the students in auditory processing. The lighting for the facility was designed to be energy efficient, cost effective, and long lasting.
