Learning Lab

Project Profile

Wichita, KS

The Learning Lab was established to offer Wichita families and educators a more personalized, flexible, and innovative learning environment. An alternative to traditional, one-size-fits-all education models, the Learning Lab offers collaborative space to empower education entrepreneurs and support customized education models for families and their children.

To meet these goals, Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) and our partners, designed a 16,000 SF central hub at Wichita’s historic Union Station. Creating a modern learning facility like this one required unique innovation, including retrofitting the historical structure, upgrading the MEP system, code compliance and accessibility improvements, and integrating more sustainable designs. The existing electrical infrastructure was adapted to meet the needs of the state-of-the-art facility. Modern industrial and functional lighting and power layouts were used to make a statement for innovation. All this renovation helped adapt a historic space for modern educational use, create a scalable model that can serve as a national example, and meet the diverse scholastic needs of more students with hands-on, applied learning.

Completed and opened in 2024, the Learning Lab now offers increased access to customized education for all families and provides new learning opportunities for students ages 5 to 18. Not only do students have a place to get hands-on, interest-driven learning, but educators are empowered to launch and grow new learning models in this space. The Lab hosts up to 220 learners and has already partnered with multiple local organizations and school models to offer affordable, high-quality education in a central location.
