Garden City Airport
Garden City Regional airport is the largest airport in western Kansas. It has daily direct flights to and from Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport and is also the home of many private and charter flights.
In 2017, PEC conducted an MEP assessment of the terminal building. The existing terminal building was built in 1959 with a restaurant and an administrative addition added in 1970, and several other small additions and remodels after that. This caused the aged facility to look patched together, and in need of an update.
Working with our partner, HNTB Architecture, a new terminal design was created and built in two phases so airport operations could continue uninterrupted. Phase 1 was completed in August 2023 and created a new 2-story area that included the ticket counter, security checkpoint, checked baggage screening, and more. Phase 2 was completed in May 2024 and finished the terminal with a baggage claim hall, car rental offices, and the remainder of the lobby and departure lounge.
PEC designed the HVAC system which included a single zone VAV packaged gas/DX rooftop units for the entry lobby and departure lounge, and a split system gas/DX furnaces at the existing building renovation. For the core of the building, a VAV packaged gas/DX rooftop unit was installed that contained VAV boxes with hot water reheat. Hydronic baseboard heat is utilized at the base of the large expanses of glass.
The electrical distribution system for the building includes two separate service entrances. The building is equipped with a 208V/3ph for general power and lighting, and a 480V/3ph which serves the large mechanical equipment and two passenger boarding bridges. This building is also equipped with an emergency generator to serve both life safety equipment (lighting) and standby equipment (TSA/security/IT).
With the rebuilding of the Garden City Airport Terminal, travelers now have a fresh space to come and go with ease. The new terminal has doubled its gate capacity from one gate to two and now has a boarding bridge, a baggage carousel, and updated technology. The new terminal celebrates the culture of southwest Kansas while offering state-of-the-art travel amenities to the region.
