Blackwell Regional Hospital

Project Profile

Stillwater, OK

Originally opened in 1954, the Blackwell Regional Hospital (BRH) had been deemed insufficient for day-to-day operations by 2016. With codes not being met, a long list of repairs and renovations needing to be made, and a decrease in services, the BRH was looking toward closure. Its closure would have meant a loss in available medical care for the city as well as 100 jobs lost.

Then, long-term and project funding came through for a new hospital to be built in Blackwell. This replace-in-place construction project presented a unique challenge, which involved maintaining an operational hospital throughout the construction process while keeping utilities uninterrupted throughout construction. This project included renovation of an existing 3-story medical office building, emergency center, and rural health clinic while adding an attached single-story structure serving administration/offices, clinical Lab, dietary services, engineering services, housekeeping, imaging (radiology/ultrasound), inpatient acute care, information technology, laundry, materials management, pharmacy, and rural health clinic. In addition to electrical and mechanical design, PEC also provided technology design as well as owner representation services.

With a population of more than 6,000 people in Blackwell, access to a local hospital is vital to its community. This facility will be able to provide excellent medical care as well as give citizens peace of mind knowing that care is nearby when it matters most.
