Confidential Aviation Administration Server Room Upgrade
This long-standing aviation manufacturer needed to increase the capacity and reliability of an existing server room located in the basement of its administration office building. Being a mission critical service to the firm, the work needed completed without shutting down the server vault. The necessity of this upgrade came from a cooling inefficiency to the computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units due to their restrictive locations. With little redundancy/backup provided in the cooling system, the combination of cooling inefficiencies and zinc whisker contamination from the existing raised floor caused data processing equipment failures. The only redundancy to the existing electrical system was two server connections from different electrical panel boards presenting a large problem and needed addressed.
PEC was brought in to design new electrical and mechanical equipment to provide the least impact to the existing room data services. All power sources implemented provided full redundancy to increase uptime and maintainability. A metering/monitoring system was installed to provide early problem notice to maintenance personnel. A battery monitoring system was provided on each uninterruptible power source (UPS) to help with early detection of battery failures. CRAC units were connected to the existing chilled water system and existing condensing water system. The condensing water system was also provided with three-way valves to connect to the domestic water system.
The upgrade provided multiple cooling sources in the event of any one cooling source failure. PEC provided commissioning of the electrical power, control, and mechanical systems to prove the full functionality of those systems. Having sought redundancy and additional capacity for their server room, the client, its employees, and the communities it serves now have peace of mind in its system reliability.
