KDOT Subarea Shop Replacement and Renovation

Project Profile

Iola, KS

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) subarea shops maintain dump trucks that spread salt/sand in preparation and during times of inclement weather. KDOT moved to reconstruct these buildings so they could continue to support the state’s transportation for many years to come.

The existing Iola Subarea Shop was demolished and replaced with a new building that includes vehicle maintenance bays and office/administration areas. The drive in/back out bays give room for up to four service vehicles to get prepped for use in the event of snow or ice which decreases delays in service. The administration area includes offices, crew room, break room, and tool storage. PEC’s structural team designed the foundations for the pre-engineered metal building and provided design for an interior mezzanine structure. The HVAC system was designed with occupant safety, comfort, and energy efficiency in mind. The vehicle bay includes gas-fired infrared tube heaters, high-volume low speed fans, and CO/NO2 sensors. Energy is saved by providing minimal ventilation when CO and NO2 levels are at acceptable limits while still protecting the adjacent office area. The electrical systems were designed with ultimate flexibility to be able to operate when severe weather strikes. Backup power sources were also included in the design to maintain power in all weather conditions.

The team at the Iola Subarea Shop can now maintain the roads in the surrounding areas quicker and more efficiently for area travelers.
