Ellis County Public Works Facility
The Ellis County Public Works department, located in Hays, Kansas, required a new facility to better serve its local communities. Plans called for a new building with office space and vehicle maintenance areas, as well as additional storage and facilities outside of the main building. Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) supported the project with electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering services.
The structural engineering team planned a 24,000 SF building that consisted of office space, vehicle maintenance garage areas, a wash bay, and safe herbicide storage. On the outer grounds of the new public works complex they created a 2,000 SF warehouse, a cold storage building, a salt bunker, and a fuel island. A facility like this requires a variety of mechanical systems working in concert, presenting a unique challenge. The new building included systems like water, waste, natural gas and ventilation. Because the building is supplied by well water, a reverse osmosis system was included for drinking water. They also needed a sand/oil separator system to capture dirt and debris from the vehicle maintenance portion of the building to keep those substances out of the wastewater system. The electrical team designed exterior and interior lighting with all LED lights.
With a new, expanded public works facility, the Ellis County team can more efficiently serve its communities. They now have an abundance of office space, garage and shop space, as well as storage to support the county’s various needs.
