Camp Kanza Water Distribution Improvement

Project Profile

Abbyville, KS

When the Catholic Diocese of Wichita purchased the Camp Kanza property, it was aware of the work required to restore it to a functional campground. At the top of the list was a new water distribution system. The existing system had been shut off and left abandoned for several years.

As the project began, there were two major obstacles to overcome. First, the records and mapping of the current water system were limited. This made locating and inspecting all the existing lines difficult because there was very little knowledge to go on. After Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) surveyed the area, the second challenge arose. The existing system was too old and unreliable; everything needed to be replaced.

The PEC team designed an all-new system to save the entire campground. Those new components included waterlines, valves, and hydrants, as well as services lines that provide running water to the buildings, and a new pump station equipped with chlorine treatment. Rehabilitation of the existing standpipe was also part of the project. The new water distribution system provides reliable service to amenities such as showers, a kitchen and dining hall, numerous cabins, a recreation building, a learning center, and a pool house.

Once everything was located on the property and the plan was made to replace the entire system, PEC assisted the client in navigating the permit process as well. In the end, Camp Kanza received an up-to-date, safe, and reliable water infrastructure that is KDHE-complaint to continue serving the community.
