Butler Community College 5000 Building Expansion

Project Profile

Andover, KS

Butler Community College invested $10 million in improvements to their 36-acre Andover, Kansas campus. Although the project involved multiple improvements around the campus, including the design of a new 19,000 SF facilities building, the focus of this project was remodeling the 5000 Building. This facility houses the student union, meeting rooms, conference rooms, computer labs, a library, a fitness center, a food court, classrooms, and technical learning spaces. These different spaces within the 5000 Building each have their own infrastructure needs. In addition, it was important that the building remained open throughout the project as the services housed there are essential to the operations of the school.

The project included a 3,000 SF addition on the west side of the building and new and improved student workspaces, classrooms, and faculty offices. A new central meeting area was established that is much larger than what was previously available; this area is now used for both school and community events. Additionally, a traffic impact study was performed, and new parking areas were added. The project also involved various permitting with the City of Andover and the State of Kansas, right-of-way vacation, and platting.

The project was phased with three distinct phases, allowing for the school to remain open throughout the process; this required contributions from many different disciplines and coordination with various entities. This investment is not only a boost for the students and faculty, but for the entire community.
