Planning for a Cleaner and More Resilient Future in Overland Park

Protecting local waterways takes more than fixing problems after they appear. It requires planning ahead and investing in solutions that benefit the local community for years to come. That is the goal of the City of Overland Park’s Watershed 3 Preliminary Project Study, which focuses on improving water quality and restoring streams throughout the Blue River Watershed in the Kansas City metropolitan area

As one of the most developed watersheds in the region, the Blue River Watershed faces ongoing challenges from growth and development. Eroding streambanks, poor water quality, and sediment buildup can affect parks, natural areas, and public infrastructure. Through this study, the City is identifying projects that can improve these conditions while protecting natural resources and enhancing community spaces. The results will help guide future investments and support the City’s stormwater management goals.

Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) is leading the study and building on lessons learned from previous watershed planning efforts in Overland Park. The team is working with the City to identify practical improvements that can strengthen local waterways and provide lasting benefits for residents.

PEC is reviewing approximately 15 city-owned properties and 5 priority stream corridors to identify areas where improvements can make the greatest impact. The team is exploring opportunities to reduce erosion, improve water quality, and strengthen stream health. For each location, PEC considers environmental benefits, long-term value, and how the improvements could benefit the surrounding community.

A key part of the study focuses on nature-based solutions. Instead of relying only on traditional stormwater infrastructure, the team is looking for ways to work with the natural landscape. These approaches can help reduce pollution, improve wildlife habitat, protect streams, and create healthier public spaces. They can also help communities better manage stormwater while supporting long-term environmental health.

The benefits of this work extend far beyond the streambanks. Cleaner waterways, healthier parks, reduced erosion, and stronger natural resources all contribute to a better quality of life for residents. The study will give City leaders the information they need to prioritize future projects and make the most of public investments. By identifying opportunities today, Overland Park is building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient community for future generations.
