2023 winners of the Project of the Year awards were recently announced by the Kansas Chapter of the American Public Works Association. One of the recipients in the Small Cities/Rural Counties category is the Haysville Biosolids Dewatering project, which received the Environmental award. This project involved the enhancement of a wastewater treatment plant situated in Haysville, Kansas, originally constructed nearly three decades ago.

PEC collaborated with Conco Construction to develop a sustainable and long-term solution for the city. The new design prioritized compliance with future nutrient removal regulations, enabling residential expansion near the plant without any concerns of odor or other complaints. Furthermore, the project aimed to maximize staff efficiency in anticipation of a potential industry-wide operator shortage. Another reason for the project’s selection was the design team’s ability to exhibit a focus on sustainability through the implementation of alternative practices and proactive funding approaches.

Moreover, the overall impact on the environment during the construction phase was minimized. The PEC team takes great pride in our contributions to this project and to the Haysville community. We are excited to see the positive impact it will have on future generations.
