Collecting goods for a greater good

Wesley Nyberg did not hesitate when a friend asked him to volunteer at the Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas (MHASCK). He jumped right in.

“It sounded like a good opportunity to help the community,” says Nyberg, transportation design engineer at PEC. MHASCK is a non-profit organization that provides services such as adult case management, attendant care, a senior companion program, housing, counseling and more. It has been serving the citizens of South Central Kansas since 1957.

The organization’s goal is to achieve a just, humane and healthy society where all people are treated with respect, dignity and the opportunity to achieve his or her full potential free from stigma and prejudice. Its mission is to empower and assist youth, families and adults in the community to achieve optimal mental health and wellness through education, advocacy and service.

Nyberg began volunteering in May 2014 where he serves on the board and is a member of the finance committee that meets every month. Nyberg even brings his volunteerism to PEC. He organized a competition between co-workers to see who could donate the most school supplies for the following school year. After receiving the donation of school supplies, MHASCK expressed its gratitude to Nyberg through email for his efforts, “They were very thankful. It made me want to do more,” says Nyberg.

With more in mind, Nyberg managed a food drive at PEC during the holiday season to collect items such as green beans, instant mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, gift certificates for turkey and more. The food drive collected about seven boxes of food and monetary donations for MHASCK. His effort helped provide meals for families and individuals served by MHASCK.
